FIFTEEN

“Well, that was a waste of time,” I said when we landed downtown. Galen opted to park in front of the police station, which meant I had no choice but to stretch my cramped muscles in front of the passing tourists and locals.

“It was, but we needed to make sure,” Galen said as he checked his phone for any texts or emails he might’ve missed during the drive. “Now we know the sirens aren’t responsible.”

“How do we know that?” I challenged, genuinely curious. “I’m not trying to be difficult or anything but just because Cordelia says something, that doesn’t automatically mean she’s telling the truth.”

“Actually, it does,” Booker countered. “Sirens aren’t known for lying.”

I was understandably dubious. “Ever?”

“Not generally. When they do something, they own up to it. Most of the time they’re proud, even if it’s something other factions wouldn’t ever consider doing.”

That sounded unlikely to me. “So, say little Ariel of the siren people decides she’s going to break curfew one night. She’s fourteen, wants to meet a boy in the woods, and manages to get out of the shack. After an hour of tongue swapping and wandering hands, she returns to the shack and gets caught. You’re telling me she says ‘sorry, Mommy, I had to be a slave to my hormones’ and leaves it at that?”

The smile Galen shot me was full of adoration. “Is it any wonder that I love you?”

“Oh, don’t make me get the hose,” Booker warned, annoyance on full display.

“Oh, come on.” Galen was beside himself with amusement. “That was absolutely adorable. Did young Hadley sneak out the window to meet up with boys?”

“Would that make you jealous?” I asked.

“Do you want it to make me jealous?”

“Probably not, but it might be fun for you to fake being jealous later so we can make up.”

“I will do my best.” Galen offered up a mock salute. “As for siren kids lying about heading out to make out with members of the opposite sex, that’s not really a thing. The parents pretty much allow it once a siren child reaches the age of maturity, which is twelve in human years, but more when you take into consideration how they count time.”

I frowned, utterly confused. “Wait ... they’re allowed to mate — I really don’t like that word — at the age of twelve?”

“It’s more complicated than that, but siren teens are allowed to go out and play with their friends whenever they want.”

Well, that was something that would likely keep me up at night if I were to give it too much thought. Rather than continue with the millions of questions I had on that front, I shook my head and returned to the original topic. “I just don’t think it’s feasible to believe that sirens never lie.”

“I didn’t say they never lie. I happen to know Aurora enjoys messing with you and lies to do it occasionally. Those lies are for fun, though. When it comes to standing up for their people — or in this case answering questions from law enforcement — they don’t lie.
